Silver Story: Tony Lawless, father of Laurie Robley, Program Coordinator

This story is to honor my Dad, Anthony “Tony” Lawless.

Born in Peoria, IL on February 18, 1934, until his recent passing on August 8, 2025. He was 91 years old. Tony was born and raised on First St. in Peoria near McKinley Grade School, attended St. Pats Grade School, and Spaulding Institute. The foundation of his Catholic schooling stayed with him his entire life.

He began his career joining the Plumbers Local Union # 63.  Over his career he worked on additions and remodeling at St Francis and Proctor Hospitals, Caterpillar, and numerous commercial and industrial projects throughout Central IL, retiring in 1994.

He enlisted in the US Navy in 1956 and worked in the Seabees Construction Force in Guam and Ulithi rebuilding the South Pacific islands after WW2. The stories he told were epic. He was very proud of his time served.  Due to his affection for his time served, he always made sure his children respected the military and stood every time the flag went by in a parade and ensured we removed our hats during the national anthem.

He met our Mom in the late 50's and married in 1960. Mom and Dad had 57 great years together until her passing in 2017.

They had 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren which he was so proud of.

As a resident of Bartonville, IL since 1964, Tony was actively involved in the community. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.

He loved all sports- especially the STL Cardinals, Notre Dame Football, Bradley Basketball, and the Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed gardening, golf, bike riding, and attending many of his grandchildren’s school and sporting activities. He also had a knack for cooking and baking. His oatmeal raisin cookies were legendary and each Christmas he would make a rum cake for us all.

Tony was easy going and always willing and able to help friends and family in need. I feel so lucky to have inherited some of those traits! He will be loved, missed, and remembered always.

With love,
Your daughter, Laurie
