"Some people move our souls to dance... and we are never, ever the same." (Flavia Weedn) These profound words, a gift to us from John, perfectly describe the lasting impact he and his wife, Betty, have left on the Graceland Center.
When John first brought Betty to our doors, her light was dimmed. Diagnosed with early dementia, she had slipped into a deep, silent depression. John came to us seeking more than just care; he sought a spark to re-engage her with life. He placed his hope in our programs, and the results were nothing short of miraculous.
Slowly, surely, Betty’s spirit resurfaced. Her journey unfolded in beautiful steps: she began to smile, then engage, then laugh, then tease, and finally, fully join the fun. John witnessed the incredible transformation firsthand, recognizing the profound impact of community on Betty’s mental and emotional well-being.
Their time with us inspired a new chapter for their family. With Betty renewed and their hearts full, John and Betty moved to Alabama to be closer to family, allowing them to truly enjoy one another in their later years.
On their departure day, a tearful and heartfelt goodbye left an indelible mark. John presented us with the framed poem and read it aloud, his voice full of gratitude for the change he saw in his beloved wife.
This is the Graceland difference.

In Peoria, where the heart found grace,
At the Graceland Center, a welcoming space.
When shadows fell on my dear wife’s mind,
At this fine center, your help was kind.
The days began with gentle fear,
As dementia’s fog kept her less than clear.
But activities, planned with loving care,
Chased away the gloom and despair
You welcomed her in, a friend to embrace,
Through shared stories and a supportive, warm place.
She joined in the exercises, so gentle and low,
Helping her spirits and energy grown
The bingo calls echoed with laughter and cheer,
A playful activity that conquered her fear.
And the crafts made with focus, so careful and fine,
Showed how her spirit began to align.
Each nutritious meal was a communal delight,
Sharing plates and moments, chasing the night.
The relationships built, the smiles freely given,
A genuine recovery, lovingly driven.
She’s energetic now, with a grateful zest,
Among all the centers, yours was the best.
With heavy hearts, we now must part,
As Alabama calls for a new start.
But the light you kindled will safely gleam,
A cherished and lifesaving dream.
Thank you, Graceland, for your sweet embrace,
For bringing her smile back to its rightful place.
